The Optical Co does bulk bill eligible eye tests through Medicare. If you are an Australian permanent resident with a valid Medicare card and meet Medicare’s eligibility criteria, your standard eye test will be billed directly to Medicare, with no out-of-pocket cost and no gap fee.
How much does an eye test cost?
For eligible Medicare cardholders, bulk billed eye tests at The Optical Co have no out-of-pocket cost. If additional costs may be incurred due to your individual eye conditions requiring additional testing, we will advise you of this at your appointment.
Do eye tests need to be in-person?
Yes, eye tests at The Optical Co are conducted in-person at one of our 17+ store locations across NSW, QLD and VIC. This allows our optometrists to use advanced diagnostic equipment including Digital Retinal Photography and Optical Coherence Tomography scans to thoroughly assess your vision and eye health.
What happens during a comprehensive eye test?
Your comprehensive eye test at The Optical Co includes: reviewing your personal and family health history; visual acuity measurements using reading charts; tests of eye health including depth perception, colour vision, peripheral vision and pupil response; refraction testing to determine lens requirements; binocular vision assessment; retinal photography using a fundus camera for high-resolution 2D images; and OCT scans for detailed 3D imaging. Afterward, your optometrist will discuss your results and treatment options.

How long is an eye prescription valid in Australia?
In Australia, glasses prescriptions are typically valid for 2 years, though this can vary based on individual circumstances and age. Your optometrist at The Optical Co will advise on the validity of your prescription and when you should return for a new eye test.
Can I use my existing prescription for new glasses?
Yes, you can use your existing valid prescription for new optical frames at The Optical Co. Bring your current prescription to your appointment or visit us in-store. If your prescription has expired or you’re experiencing vision changes, we recommend booking a bulk billed eye test to get an updated prescription.
Can my prescription be used for contact lenses?
No, a glasses prescription cannot be used for contact lenses. Contact lenses require additional measurements and assessments to ensure a proper fit and maintain eye health. To receive a contact lens prescription, you’ll need to book a contact lens consultation and fitting at The Optical Co.
How do I read my glasses prescription?
Your glasses prescription includes values for each eye: SPH (sphere) indicates near or farsightedness, CYL (cylinder) and AXIS indicate astigmatism, and ADD indicates additional magnification for reading. Your optometrist at The Optical Co will explain your prescription during your appointment.

If your new prescription feels wrong, The Optical Co offers a 90 Day Prescription Lens Comfort Guarantee. If you had your eye test at The Optical Co and within 90 days of your purchase you are experiencing difficulty seeing clearly or you have had a sudden prescription change, we will exchange your prescription lenses for free.

What’s the difference between daily and monthly contact lenses?
Daily contact lenses are designed for single-day use and discarded at the end of each day – no cleaning required. Monthly contact lenses are worn for up to 30 days with proper daily cleaning and storage. The Optical Co offers both options from brands like Acuvue, CooperVision, Alcon, and Bausch & Lomb.
Can you sleep in contact lenses?
Most contact lenses should not be worn while sleeping. However, The Optical Co offers Air Optix Night and Day lenses which can be worn 24 hours a day for up to 30 days and nights, even while you sleep. These lenses allow six times more oxygen through than traditional soft lenses. Always consult your optometrist before sleeping in any contact lenses.

Yes, contact lenses have an expiration date printed on the packaging. Do not use contact lenses past their expiration date. Additionally, daily lenses should be discarded after one day of use, fortnightly lenses after two weeks, and monthly lenses after 30 days of opening, regardless of the expiration date.

Are eye tests covered by Medicare?
Yes, generally bulk billed eye tests are covered by Medicare at The Optical Co. For eligible patients, bulk billing provides a complete assessment with no out-of-pocket cost.
Can I claim glasses and contact lenses through my health fund?
Yes, depending on your health fund and level of cover, you may be eligible to claim back all or part of the cost of your new prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses or contact lenses. The Optical Co accepts all Australian private health funds. Visit us in-store with your health fund card to find out your rebate amount.
Which health funds does The Optical Co accept?
The Optical Co accepts all Australian private health funds including AHM by Medibank, Bupa, HCF, Medibank, nib, and many more. Visit us in-store to receive optical rebates through HICAPS instant claiming.
Can I buy prescription sunglasses online with health insurance?
Yes, you can buy prescription sunglasses online and claim with your health insurance. For online purchases, The Optical Co requires full payment upfront, then you make a claim directly with your health fund. You will receive an itemised receipt with optical health fund claiming codes within 1 business day. Your health fund will typically reimburse you within a few days.
How often can you purchase new glasses or sunglasses with health insurance?
How often you can purchase new glasses or sunglasses with health insurance depends on your fund. For most health funds, optical covers are usually effective for a 12-month period. On December 31 (June 30 for AHM), any benefits you have paid for but not used will expire. Contact your private health fund provider for specific details on your optical benefits.
Are all types of glasses covered by insurance?

At The Optical Co, there is no additional fee for processing health fund claims when claiming in-store through HICAPS. Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your level of cover and the eyewear selected. We do not charge a gap fee for standard bulk billed eye tests.
How does The Optical Co work with health funds?
In-store, The Optical Co can process instant claims through HICAPS – simply bring your health fund card. For online purchases, you have the option to claim instantly when selecting the TYRO Payment Portal or if you prefer to pay with an alternative method (PayPal, AfterPay) we provide an itemised receipt with claiming codes within 1 business day for you to submit to your health fund directly. We accept all major health funds.

How long is The Optical Co warranty valid for?
The Optical Co offers a 1 Year Repair or Replacement warranty on eyewear purchased from us. This is part of our Total Satisfaction Guarantee which also includes a 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee and 90 Day Prescription Lens Comfort Guarantee.
What does the 1-year repair or replacement warranty cover?
The 1-year repair or replacement warranty covers product defects. If your eyewear breaks due to a product defect within 12 months of purchase, The Optical Co will replace or repair them for FREE – regardless of any manufacturer warranty exclusions that may apply.
Does the warranty cover accidental damage?
Yes, the warranty does cover accidental damage, but at a reduced rate. If you accidentally sit on, break, or damage beyond repair an otherwise defect-free pair of glasses within 12 months of purchase, The Optical Co will replace them with a brand new pair at half the original price.
Can scratched lenses be repaired or replaced under warranty?
Scratched lenses are generally not covered under warranty as they are considered wear and tear rather than product defects. However, if you had your eye test at The Optical Co and are experiencing difficulty seeing clearly within 90 days of purchase, our 90 Day Prescription Lens Comfort Guarantee may allow for a free lens exchange.
What should I do if my glasses break?
If your glasses break, bring them to any The Optical Co location. If they broke due to a product defect within 12 months, we’ll repair or replace them free. If accidentally damaged within 12 months, we’ll replace them at half price. We also offer lifetime free adjustments and cleaning.
Can my existing lenses be used in a replacement frame?
This depends on the lens shape and condition. Visit your nearest The Optical Co store and our team can assess whether your existing lenses can be fitted into a new frame, or advise on the best solution for your situation.
Are adjustments and cleaning free at The Optical Co?
